Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara Accelerates Digital Transformation with T-Systems

When Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara (THKD), the flagship hospital of the fastest-growing healthcare group in Malaysia, wanted to expand its footprint, it decided to do so both physically and digitally. THKD appointed T-Systems Singapore, a leading provider and systems integrator of healthcare ICT solutions, to enable its digital transformation with the vision of enhancing patient experience, improving patient outcomes, and driving operational efficiency.

“Our vision is always innovating and enhancing patient safety and experience,” said Nadiah Wan, Executive Director and Group CEO, TMC Life Sciences Bhd., the parent company of THKD. “When we embarked on this expansion programme to add 400 beds, we decided to futureproof our offerings and embark on a digital transformation that would support our vision to provide patient centred services and integrated, value-based healthcare.”

With this vision, THKD management is exploring solutions to address the rising healthcare demand and digital needs. The first phase of the digital transformation started in November 2020 and is expected to be completed in 2023. T-Systems will implement SAP ERP and healthcare offerings SAP Patient Management and the SAP Cerner i.s.h.med solution, while also setting up the medical group’s digital infrastructure on a public cloud.

“We partnered with T-Systems because they have a proven track record of implementing SAP for Healthcare solutions in Southeast Asia and Europe with an end-to-end solution that optimizes operational efficiency in the finance, procurement, revenue cycle management and EMR functions,” Nadiah said. “It is also a fully integrated system from front to back with best-practices in place, allowing us to make a large leap in transforming and improving ourselves, rather than an incremental step-wise change.”

T-Systems has supported 1,950 projects for more than 700 customers around the world in the healthcare industry, supporting and driving their digital healthcare transformation.

T-Systems optimized accessibility for THKD with a real-time dashboard where staff could remotely access medical records, manage patient experience, order supplies and expedite the billing process— all in one place.

“Once the migration is completed, patients can receive their hospital bills within minutes instead of hours, which is a huge bonus to enhancing patient experience with THKD,” said Andy David, Healthcare Director at T-Systems. “Moreover, hospital staff can easily manage schedules, hospital equipment needs and supplies without consulting multiple sources, which results in bolstering the quality of care THKD can deliver for patients.”

T-System has spearheaded digital transformation for hospitals around the world. For PT Mitra Keluarga Karya Sehat Tbk, a health service provider in Indonesia, T-Systems implemented an integrated system that connects to insurance providers and various other healthcare systems in real time to deliver accurate medical services.

“A reliable single source of truth is vital to ensuring real-time visibility of what’s happening throughout the hospital,” said Arkadiusz Czopor, Managing Director, T-Systems Asia South. “I am very pleased that THKD has chosen T-Systems for their digital transformation. By partnering with us to implement SAP for Healthcare solutions and set up ICT infrastructure on Azure public cloud, THKD will have a solid foundation to run hospital operations and in the future have the full scalability potential for new locations for quick roll-out and connection to the central backend.”

Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara currently features 200 beds and over 100 trained medical and surgical consultants. Once the expansion is completed, the new facility will have a combined capacity of 600 beds, 12 state-of-the art operating theatres, 154 outpatient specialist clinics and an integrated cancer and nuclear medicine centre amongst other key tertiary healthcare services. The hospital was named Malaysia’s Fertility Company of the Year in 2019 by Frost & Sullivan. It received numerous awards for providing the best service for diabetes treatments, women’s health and wellness along with ear, nose and throat treatments.

“We appreciate T-Systems setting a solid foundation for our expansion and digital transformation that is not only scalable to meet our growing needs, but also reliable and secure, too,” Nadiah said.
