What if visiting an art fair meant stepping inside a nostalgic 1980s Malaysian kopitiam, discovering a working music recording room and exploring colourful characters that look as though they have escaped from a comic book?

That is the kind of experience awaiting visitors when A4 Art Fair 2026 returns to GMBB, Kuala Lumpur, from 6 to 8 November 2026, bringing together more than 50 artists and creative practitioners from Malaysia and across Asia.

Now entering its second edition, the fair is expanding the idea of what an art exhibition can be. Instead of focusing exclusively on paintings displayed along gallery walls, visitors can explore a mix of contemporary art, street culture, fashion, music, photography, collectible characters and creative objects for everyday living.

Organised by A4 Art Gallery, this year's edition is titled "The Returning #2" and continues the fair's broader theme, "The Art of Everything", which celebrates creativity across different forms and disciplines.

The three-day event will feature Malaysian artists alongside international names from Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and China, with admission starting from RM12 for a one-day adult ticket.

Whether visitors are serious art collectors, fans of designer toys or simply looking for something different to do in Kuala Lumpur, the fair aims to make contemporary art more approachable through experiences that connect creativity with familiar aspects of daily life.

A Nostalgic 1980s Kopitiam Reimagined Through Art
One of the more distinctive installations at A4 Art Fair 2026 draws inspiration from a familiar part of Malaysian life: the neighbourhood kopitiam.

For Malaysian artist Lao Wang, the inspiration comes from childhood memories of spending time around his grandfather's coffee shop. Those experiences have continued to influence his creative work, even as his artistic career has extended to Shanghai.

At the fair, Lao Wang will revisit those memories through an installation inspired by a Malaysian kopitiam from the 1980s, bringing elements of nostalgia and local cultural history into a contemporary exhibition setting.

The concept is a reminder that art does not always need to begin with an extraordinary subject. Sometimes, the places we grew up visiting, the objects we remember and the everyday environments that shaped our childhood can become the starting point for meaningful creative expression.

For older visitors, the installation may bring back memories of a different era, while younger audiences can discover how familiar Malaysian spaces can be interpreted through contemporary art.

Danny One Brings Music Into the Exhibition Space
Another experience moves beyond visual art into the world of music.

Malaysian singer-songwriter, radio personality and multidisciplinary creator Danny One will transform part of the exhibition into a recording room, bringing his interests in music and visual storytelling together.

Danny One is also known as the creator of the original character Banana Man, reflecting his creative interests beyond conventional music production.

His participation introduces a different perspective to the fair, demonstrating how music, character creation and visual art can exist within the same creative space.

For visitors accustomed to art exhibitions that focus primarily on finished paintings or sculptures, the recording room offers another way to experience creativity through a medium usually associated with studios and performances.

Japanese Pop Art and the Return of Physical Photography
Art enthusiasts who enjoy Japanese contemporary culture will have another reason to explore the fair, with Japanese artist COTOH presenting a solo exhibition.

Known for his distinctive visual style, COTOH's practice moves between minimalist, cartoon-like illustrations and more elaborate oil paintings and screen prints.

His work frequently explores expressive portraits and character-driven imagery, blending elements of contemporary illustration with traditional artistic techniques.

Having collaborated across music and fashion, COTOH brings an artistic perspective that crosses different creative industries, making his exhibition particularly relevant to visitors interested in Japanese pop culture and contemporary visual design.

Photography enthusiasts, meanwhile, can look forward to an experience by Zontiga, an analogue photography studio presenting a Polaroid portrait space and CD listening corner.

At a time when photographs are usually taken on smartphones and music is streamed instantly, the experience offers a return to physical formats that encourage visitors to appreciate the process of creating and enjoying media.

The combination of instant photography and physical music recordings brings a nostalgic element to the fair while introducing younger visitors to creative formats that existed long before today's digital platforms.

Graffiti, Street Culture and Collectible Characters Take Centre Stage
For visitors drawn to bold colours, street art and character design, A4 Art Fair 2026 will feature several artists whose work challenges the boundaries between fine art and popular culture.

Among them is Malaysian artist Asmoe Roc, an architect and member of the internationally active TMD graffiti crew.

With more than 15 years of experience, Asmoe Roc has developed a style influenced by architecture, particularly Brutalism and futurism. His work combines intricate geometric structures with graffiti lettering, transforming familiar letterforms into complex compositions that resemble architectural sculptures.

Another familiar name in Malaysia's contemporary art scene is Katun, also known as Abdul Hafiz Abdul Rahman.

Katun has gained international recognition for his graffiti-inspired artwork, particularly his signature mischievous ape character. His creations combine street culture, character design and contemporary art, demonstrating how graffiti can evolve beyond walls and public spaces into galleries and collectibles.

From Indonesia, Arkiv Vilmansa will bring his colourful artistic universe to the fair, featuring original characters expressed through paintings, sculptures and collectible creations.

Originally trained in architecture, Vilmansa has developed a creative career extending across fine art, fashion and design, including collaborations with international furniture and streetwear brands.

The fair will also feature character-based creations from Kenji Chai, whose blue dog Chaigo has become a recognisable part of his artistic identity, alongside Uncle Belly from China, known for the unconventional superhero character Belly Man.

Additional works by Janggutbear and JNJF × Drawdelow will contribute to the fair's selection of original characters and designer collectibles.

For those interested in art toys and contemporary character culture, these showcases highlight how illustration, sculpture and collectibles can become different expressions of an artist's imagination.

When Fashion, Textiles and Everyday Objects Become Art
Not all art is meant to hang on a wall. Some of it can be worn, touched or incorporated into everyday living.

A4 Art Fair 2026 explores this idea through artists and designers who experiment with fashion, textiles and materials traditionally associated with home interiors.

Malaysian fashion designer Teresa Thian, founder of byThian, will present a specially curated installation that combines fashion, art and design.

Known for her contemporary silhouettes and expressive prints, Teresa's participation explores how fashion can function as an artistic medium beyond conventional clothing collections.

Meanwhile, tailor and creative practitioner Alan Hung approaches traditional garment-making techniques from a different perspective, extending his craftsmanship into wearable art, sculptural forms and soft-toy design.

His practice demonstrates how familiar materials and tailoring techniques can take on unexpected creative identities when removed from their usual contexts.

Another artist, Tan Xin Lin, works with terrazzo, a material commonly associated with flooring and architectural surfaces, transforming it into colourful artistic objects intended for contemporary living.

The exploration of materials continues with Shikhei, whose work moves between fashion, fabric, painting and animation, experimenting with different forms of visual expression.

For those who enjoy surreal and imaginative imagery, Art Lai will also feature richly textured paintings that combine unexpected subjects and forms, creating compositions that blur the boundaries between familiar reality and fantasy.

Together, these artists demonstrate how contemporary creativity can exist within everyday objects and materials, challenging the assumption that art must always take the form of a painting or sculpture.

Thailand's Mango Art Festival Joins the International Line-Up
The fair is not limited to Malaysian artists, with several international participants adding different cultural and artistic perspectives to the event.

Among the highlights is Mango Art Festival, a creative platform associated with Bangkok's contemporary art scene, which will participate in A4 Art Fair 2026 alongside eight independent Thai artists.

Known for bringing together art, design and unconventional creative practices, the Thai showcase will introduce visitors to a selection of contemporary styles and artistic approaches emerging from Thailand.

The international line-up also includes Japanese artist Takeuchi Hiro-Omi, whose abstract digital prints explore relationships between colour, light and emotion.

From Thailand, Nopphadol Yingsuk, also known as Aftertest Bangkok, will present colourful paintings and sculptures inspired by the imagination and wonder of childhood.

With artists from Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and China represented, A4 Art Fair creates opportunities for visitors to discover different creative perspectives within a single venue.

Six Creative Categories, With Something Beyond Traditional Art
To accommodate its diverse creative line-up, A4 Art Fair 2026 brings together artworks and experiences across six categories:
  • Art × Brand: Creative expressions that explore relationships between art and brands.
  • Art × Living: Art-inspired objects and designs associated with contemporary living.
  • Art × Sustainable: Creative practices exploring sustainability.
  • Art × Prints: Printed artwork and visual expressions across different styles.
  • Art × Artisan & New Media: Craftsmanship and creative practices involving contemporary media.
  • Art × Pop & Sculpture: Pop culture, character art and sculptural creations.
The categories reflect the fair's intention to challenge conventional expectations of art exhibitions, allowing different creative disciplines to exist alongside one another.

According to Ng Si Juan, Founder of A4 Art Gallery, the fair was established to encourage people to recognise how art already forms part of everyday life.

"When we started the A4 Art Fair, we wanted to challenge the idea that art belongs only on gallery walls or in the hands of collectors. Art is already part of our lives, in the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, the objects we surround ourselves with and the memories we carry," she said.

"Returning for a second edition, we are excited to see how more than 50 artists, each with their own creative language and experiences, interpret this idea in different ways. We hope visitors will come with curiosity, discover artists they may not have encountered before, and perhaps leave seeing art a little differently."

The event is led by A4 Art Gallery, with GMBB serving as its community partner.
