How much santan is enough to make a good dish even better? Ask different Malaysians and chances are, you will get different answers. Some believe a little goes a long way, while others prefer that extra richness that gives their favourite dishes a creamier, more satisfying taste.

Now, that familiar kitchen debate has found its way onto digital billboards, with Malaysian coconut milk brand M&S Santan joining the conversation through a playful campaign built around two simple words: "cukup" and "lebih".

Running from 22 to 28 October 2026, the campaign brings a cheeky Malaysian twist to the ongoing santan conversation, with digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertisements appearing along the MRR2 Highway, Kota Damansara and near AEON Mall Metro Prima in Kepong.

Rather than taking a conventional product advertising approach, the Ipoh-based brand is tapping into something Malaysians know well: the friendly disagreement over whether a dish already has enough flavour or could do with a little more.

When 'Cukup' Meets 'Lebih' in Malaysia's Santan Conversation
The campaign arrives shortly after fellow coconut milk brand Kara introduced its own playful santan advertising, bringing a little humour into a product category that Malaysians usually encounter in supermarket aisles and home kitchens.

M&S Food's response takes that conversation in a slightly different direction, shifting the focus from what is considered "cukup" (enough) to the idea of "lebih" (more) when it comes to the aroma, creaminess and flavour that santan brings to food.

It is a familiar sentiment in Malaysian cooking. A recipe might specify a particular amount of coconut milk, but anyone who has spent time in the kitchen knows that personal preferences can make all the difference. Some like their dishes lighter, while others enjoy a richer, creamier finish.

That everyday difference in taste is what makes the campaign's wordplay relatable. Instead of explaining the product through lengthy advertising claims, M&S Santan uses a simple expression that Malaysians can immediately associate with their own cooking habits.

The reference to Kara also adds another layer to the campaign. Rather than presenting the two brands as being involved in a serious rivalry, the creative can be seen as light-hearted brand banter, with M&S Santan offering its own take on a conversation already taking place.

It is the kind of advertising exchange that feels less like a formal corporate message and more like the playful back-and-forth Malaysians might hear around a dining table.

Putting a Familiar Malaysian Ingredient in the Spotlight
Santan has long been part of Malaysia's culinary identity, contributing the distinctive richness, aroma and creamy texture associated with many traditional dishes.

Whether used in nasi lemak, curries, rendang or traditional desserts, coconut milk is an ingredient that many Malaysians recognise not simply for its presence in a recipe, but for the flavour and texture it brings to the finished dish.

For M&S Food, the campaign uses that familiarity as its starting point. Instead of attempting to introduce santan as something new, the brand celebrates the role it already plays in Malaysian food culture.

The move from "cukup" to "lebih" is therefore more than a catchy phrase. It reflects the different ways Malaysians enjoy their food, particularly when it comes to the richness and creaminess of coconut milk-based dishes.

The campaign also demonstrates how an everyday household ingredient can become the subject of a more entertaining advertising conversation without relying on complicated messaging.

A Malaysian Brand Bringing Local Humour to Digital Billboards
Behind the campaign is M&S Food, a homegrown santan brand based in Ipoh, Perak, with an identity closely connected to Malaysian culinary traditions.

The company's name itself reflects that connection, with "Malaysia" representing its local origins and "Santan" referring to the coconut milk ingredient commonly used in Malaysian cooking.

Through this latest campaign, M&S Food is placing its Malaysian identity at the centre of its advertising, using familiar language and a sense of humour that feels relevant to local audiences.

The choice of digital out-of-home advertising also gives the campaign a presence beyond social media. Motorists and passers-by travelling through selected areas of the Klang Valley may encounter the creative during their daily journeys, turning an otherwise routine moment into an opportunity to notice the wordplay.

With advertisements appearing along the MRR2 Highway, in Kota Damansara and near AEON Mall Metro Prima in Kepong, the campaign places its message in public spaces where a short, recognisable phrase can communicate its idea without requiring a lengthy explanation.

Whether people agree that "cukup" is enough or believe a little "lebih" makes the difference, M&S Santan has found a distinctly Malaysian way to bring the conversation back to one of the country's most familiar cooking ingredients.
