McDonald’s Malaysia Celebrates 10 Years of Mekdi Community Month with Birthday Parties for Children from Over 140 Welfare Homes

McDonald’s Malaysia is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Mekdi Community Month in 2026, bringing birthday celebrations and meaningful experiences to children from more than 140 welfare homes nationwide.

This year's initiative involves more than 100 McDonald’s restaurants across Malaysia, working in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) to organise birthday parties for children, including those who may never have experienced a birthday celebration of their own.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, McDonald’s Malaysia hosted a special joint birthday party at its Seksyen 3, Shah Alam Drive-Thru restaurant, welcoming children from Rumah Kasih Harmoni Paya Jaras, Persatuan Rumah Kanak-Kanak Trinity Selangor and Yayasan Sunbeams Home.

The event brought the children together for an afternoon of games, birthday cakes, Happy Meals and activities designed to create happy memories with their friends.

Mekdi Community Month Marks 10 Years of Giving Back to Malaysians
First introduced in 2017, Mekdi Community Month has grown into one of McDonald’s Malaysia's key community outreach initiatives, encouraging restaurant teams to build closer relationships with the neighbourhoods they serve.

Rather than focusing solely on one-off charitable contributions, the initiative brings McDonald’s employees together with local communities through activities that encourage personal connections and ongoing support.

Over the past decade, the programme has reached hundreds of thousands of Malaysians through various activities organised across the country.

To date, McDonald’s Malaysia has carried out more than 10,000 community activities under Mekdi Community Month, reflecting the scale of participation from its restaurant teams nationwide.

For its 10th anniversary, the company is placing particular emphasis on celebrating children living in welfare homes, ensuring they have opportunities to experience the excitement and happiness associated with birthday celebrations.

More Than 100 McDonald’s Restaurants Celebrate Children from Over 140 Welfare Homes
This year's Mekdi Community Month involves more than 100 participating McDonald’s restaurants and over 140 welfare homes across Malaysia, made possible through collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare.

The birthday celebrations are organised either at participating McDonald’s restaurants or directly at the welfare homes, depending on the arrangements made with each institution.

The approach allows restaurant teams to connect with children and caregivers in their surrounding communities while creating celebrations that are accessible to the participating homes.

For children who may not have had the opportunity to celebrate their birthdays previously, these gatherings offer a chance to enjoy a special occasion with friends, share a meal and take part in activities outside their usual routines.

Speaking about the initiative, Dato’ Haji Azmir Jaafar, Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald’s Malaysia, emphasised the importance of remaining connected to the communities surrounding its restaurants.

He shared that caring for the community has always been central to McDonald’s Malaysia, with restaurant teams spending time with children and caregivers while developing relationships with nearby welfare homes over the years.

He also highlighted the importance of helping children feel remembered and valued, particularly those who may never have experienced a birthday celebration.

Birthday Celebrations Go Beyond Cake and Happy Meals
While birthday cakes, games and Happy Meals were part of the celebrations, McDonald’s Malaysia also introduced activities that encouraged the children to create something meaningful for one another.

Children from Rumah Kasih Harmoni Paya Jaras participated in a video-making workshop, where they learned to produce birthday greeting videos for their friends.

Meanwhile, children from several participating welfare homes joined arts and crafts workshops to create handmade gifts.

These personalised videos and gifts were incorporated into the birthday celebration in Shah Alam, adding a more thoughtful element to the occasion.

Instead of simply receiving gifts, the children had the opportunity to contribute to the celebration themselves, sharing their creativity and making something special for others.

The activities also provided opportunities for the children to learn new skills, express themselves and enjoy working together with their friends.

RMHC Malaysia Contributes RM5,000 Each to Three Welfare Homes
Beyond organising birthday celebrations, Ronald McDonald House Charities Malaysia (RMHC Malaysia) also provided financial contributions to selected welfare homes under JKM to help support the children in their care.

During the Shah Alam celebration, three welfare homes received contributions of RM5,000 each, bringing the combined contribution to RM15,000.

The recipients were Rumah Kasih Harmoni Paya Jaras, Persatuan Rumah Kanak-Kanak Trinity Selangor and Yayasan Sunbeams Home.

The contributions are intended to help the organisations meet the everyday needs of the children under their care, extending the impact of Mekdi Community Month beyond the birthday festivities.

For welfare homes that rely on continued support to provide care and essential services, contributions such as these can help ease some of their operational needs.

Welfare Home Appreciates the Meaning Behind the Birthday Celebrations
For the participating welfare homes, the value of Mekdi Community Month goes beyond the food, gifts and activities provided during the event.

Jamaludin Bin Wahab, Principal of Rumah Kasih Harmoni, Paya Jaras, shared that the children are deeply touched when people take the time to visit them and celebrate their birthdays.

He explained that opportunities to participate in new activities and spend time with friends make these occasions particularly meaningful.

Jamaludin also expressed his appreciation to McDonald’s Malaysia and RMHC Malaysia for the care and support extended to the children.

His comments highlight how simple gestures, such as remembering a child's birthday or organising a celebration, can make a lasting impression.

A Decade of Bringing Communities Together
As Mekdi Community Month enters its 10th year, the initiative continues to demonstrate how businesses can play an active role in supporting the communities around them.

Through its collaboration with JKM, participation from more than 100 restaurants and engagement with over 140 welfare homes, McDonald’s Malaysia is extending the reach of its community activities to children across the country.

The combination of birthday celebrations, creative workshops and financial contributions also shows how community programmes can provide different forms of support, from creating joyful experiences to helping welfare homes meet practical needs.

With more than 10,000 community activities organised since 2017, Mekdi Community Month has become a long-running initiative that connects McDonald’s restaurant teams with the people and organisations in their neighbourhoods.

For the children taking part in this year's celebrations, however, the most memorable moments may simply be the opportunity to enjoy a birthday cake, play games and celebrate alongside their friends.
