McDonald's Malaysia's Zakat Contributions Reach RM16 Million Since 2017
The RM2 million zakat payment continues McDonald's Malaysia's annual contributions, which have totalled RM16 million over the past decade.
The company's 2026 zakat distribution programme began in Kelantan in July before extending to other states and the Federal Territories, with Putrajaya marking the programme's 10th location.
Through the programme, McDonald's Malaysia works with zakat institutions to distribute contributions and provide essential assistance to eligible asnaf households.
Dato' Haji Azmir Jaafar, Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald's Malaysia, said fulfilling the company's zakat obligations remains an important part of its business responsibilities.
"Alhamdulillah, McDonald's Malaysia is able to continue paying RM2 million in zakat this year, bringing our total contribution to RM16 million since 2017. Within the blessings we have received lies the rightful share of the asnaf community that must be fulfilled. That is why this obligation has always been part of our responsibility in conducting our business," he said.
He also acknowledged the role of customers, employees and business partners in supporting the company's continued contributions.
"The support of our customers, the efforts of our employees and the cooperation of our business partners enable us to continue fulfilling this responsibility. Through our collaboration with zakat institutions, we hope these contributions will help meet the needs of asnaf recipients and support efforts to improve their well-being," he added.
80 Asnaf Families Receive Kotak Rezeki Assistance in Putrajaya
As part of the presentation ceremony, McDonald's Malaysia distributed its Kotak Rezeki assistance packages to 80 asnaf families from Putrajaya.
The packages contained daily necessities intended to help recipients manage household expenses.
The initiative was carried out alongside the company's zakat distribution programme, which involves working with local zakat institutions to identify and support eligible recipients.
Federal Territories Mufti Tuan Haji Ahmad Fauwaz bin Fadzil highlighted the importance of fulfilling zakat obligations and managing wealth responsibly.
"Zakat teaches us to be grateful and to manage our wealth with a strong sense of responsibility. This gratitude is expressed through obedience to Allah SWT's commands, including fulfilling zakat obligations when the required conditions are met," he said.
He added that assistance should be delivered with sensitivity towards recipients' circumstances and dignity.
"Assistance must be provided with wisdom, preserving the dignity of recipients and taking their actual circumstances into account. For those who are able, support through education, skills training and employment opportunities can also help them build more stable lives."
