Ampersand Advisory Aims to Develop Malaysia's Next Generation of Filmmakers
Sandeep Joseph, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Ampersand Advisory, said the inaugural competition had demonstrated the range of creative talent among Malaysia's emerging filmmakers.
"When we launched CUT!, we believed Malaysia had a wealth of untapped filmmaking talent waiting for the right opportunity. The originality and expressiveness we've seen throughout this competition have proved us right. SULUH and the other winning films demonstrate that compelling storytelling, imagination and technical craft are very much alive among our emerging filmmakers."
He explained that the competition was created to provide exposure and practical opportunities for aspiring filmmakers beyond the recognition associated with winning awards.
"CUT! was never intended to be just another competition. We want it to be a launchpad for Malaysian talent, giving promising filmmakers the exposure and opportunities to take their craft further. As a filmmaker myself, I know how important that first opportunity can be. We have made a promising start, but there is much more to do. With CUT! 2, we hope to discover even more original voices and see more Malaysian stories travel beyond our shores. We appreciate Canon's support greatly. And we would also invite other corporate sponsors to come aboard and help grow the next generation of Malaysian film talent."
By providing a cinema screening for 24 shortlisted films and bringing participants together with industry professionals, CUT! offered emerging filmmakers an opportunity to present their work to an audience beyond online platforms.

From Sup Daging to CUT!: How the Competition Began
CUT! developed from Ampersand Advisory's earlier exploration of Malaysian storytelling, including the psychological horror short film Sup Daging, released in March 2026 in conjunction with International Women's Day.
The film was conceptualised by the agency's Gen Z talents, Maimunah Wahab and Chloee Pang, and produced with cinematographer Farhan Syaza and his team using Canon cameras.
According to Ampersand Advisory, Sup Daging had accumulated more than 750,000 online views as of October 2026.
While the film began as an internal creative project, CUT! expanded the opportunity to aspiring filmmakers across Malaysia, inviting them to submit original horror stories for evaluation by industry professionals.
Its inaugural season culminated in the cinema screening of 24 shortlisted films and the presentation of awards to productions recognised for their storytelling and technical achievements.
