This World Oral Health Day, Prof Seow Liang Lin, Dean of the School of Dentistry at IMU University, is flipping the script on how we view oral hygiene. According to her, there’s a strong (and often overlooked) link between oral and gut health, and it could be impacting more than just your breath.

Here’s what most people miss:
- Gum disease often doesn’t hurt until it’s too late
- Bleeding gums? Not normal
- Losing teeth = fewer food options = risk of malnutrition
Plus, common habits like smoking or skipping dental visits can quietly fuel this chain reaction. Even your favourite instant noodles can’t save you from a messed-up microbiome.

So what now? Prof Seow keeps it simple:
- Brush + floss = non-negotiable
- Visit your dentist at least once a year
- If you wear braces or have gum issues, go more often
- Build a relationship with your dentist, you’ll thank yourself later
“Think of your dentist as your health ally, not just someone you see when things go wrong,” she said.
