Old but gold: 22% of PC users still running end-of-life Windows 7 OS

Kaspersky conducted a study based on anonymized OS metadata provided by consenting Kaspersky Security Network users. The survey has found that almost one quarter (22%) of PC users are still using the end-of-life OS Windows 7, which stopped receiving mainstream support in January 2020. When an OS comes to the end of its lifecycle, no more updates will be issued by the vendor, including critical security fixes.

Although a trusted operating system may seem fine on the surface because it does everything you need it to do, if the vendor no longer supports it, it could be susceptible to attacks. When operating systems reach end-of-life, vulnerabilities will remain without update patches to resolve issues, providing cyberattackers with potential ways to gain access to a system. Therefore, it is critical to update your OS to protect your system or business network from this avoidable issue.

Among those still using Windows 7, consumers, small and medium businesses (SMBs), and very small businesses (VSBs) occupy almost the same share – 22% each. It’s noteworthy, that almost a quarter of VSBs still use the outdated OS and, particularly considering that they do not have dedicated IT staff responsible solely for cybersecurity – it makes it more important to ensure their OS is up-to-date. For now, businesses can still receive extended paid support for Windows 7, but this means extra expense – and this offering will not be available forever [1].

*B2C = business to consumer, SMB = Small and Medium Enterprises, VSB = Very Small Businesses

Kaspersky’s findings also showed that only a small percentage (less than 1%) of people and businesses still use older operating systems, such as Windows XP and Vista, support for which ended in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Overall, almost one quarter (24%) of users are still running a Windows OS without mainstream support [2].

Fortunately, 72% of users are using Windows 10, the latest version of Windows OS, which appears to be the safest choice as well.

“Updating your operating system might seem like a nuisance for many. But OS updates are not just there just to fix errors, or to enable the newest interface. The procedure introduces fixes for those bugs that can open a gaping door for cybercriminals to enter. Even if you think you are vigilant and protected while online, updating your OS is an essential element of security that should not be overlooked, regardless of any third-party security solution’s presence. If OS is obsolete, it can no longer receive these critical updates. If your house is old and crumbling, there is no point to install a new door. It makes more sense to find a new home, sooner rather than later. The same attitude is needed when it comes to ensuring the security of the operating system you trust with your valuable data every day” comments Oleg Gorobets, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Kaspersky.

Knowing the risks of an end-of-life operating system is a good start but acting on that knowledge is a smart way to finish. So, to protect yourself, or your business, Kaspersky recommends the following:

  • Use an up-to-date version of the OS and make sure the auto-update feature is enabled.
  • If upgrading to the latest OS version is not possible, organizations should consider this attack vector in their threat model and ensure smart separation of vulnerable nodes from the rest of the network. Kaspersky Embedded Systems Security can provide support in this case, as it allows operating an OS as old as Windows XP SP2 that runs on systems with very low specifications.
  • Use solutions with exploit prevention technologies, such as Kaspersky Security Cloud, Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business, and Kaspersky Small Office Security, which help to reduce the risk of exploitation of unpatched vulnerabilities that can be found in and obsolete OS (Windows 7 and earlier).

[1] According to MS Extended Security Updates FAQ, the last term of ESU will end in 2023.
[2] Among such OS are: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows XP, Windows Vista.

Appointed PR agency on record for WCT Holdings Berhad plus seven of its subsidiaries through a competitive pitch

Citrine One Malaysia (“COMY”) has today announced it has been appointed as WCT Holdings Berhd’s (“WCT Group”) public relations agency on record with effect from 1st April 2021.

The group-wide appointment also made COMY the PR agency on record for seven other business entities under its wings namely WCT Land, WCT Malls Management which includes Paradigm Mall Petaling Jaya and Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru along with its two airport malls - gateway@klia2, SkyPark Terminal and Première Hotel Klang.

The appointment was made following a competitive pitch between two other agencies early February, in which COMY presented an integrated PR approach combining brand innovation, community partnership, media relations and thought leadership initiatives to make WCT’s brand promise of delivering excellence more relatable to the community.

Ivlynn Yap
“As standalone brands, WCT Group’s subsidiaries have done a good job in making its various business entities relevant among their stakeholders.

“However, in order to build a stronger brand, WCT Group decided the time has come for all business entities under the Group to consistently be seen and heard with one unified brand language,” said Ivlynn Yap, Founder and Managing Director, Citrine One Group.

WCT Group’s engineering and construction division had recently won a RM440 million main contract from the Ministry of Transport Malaysia to undertake the proposed extension and upgrading of Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kota Bahru, Kelantan.

The company’s property development division will be launching several projects this year and digitalisation of its retail malls is also currently a work in progress.

The appointment of COMY is aimed to assist WCT Group in amplifying the brand’s messaging of delivering excellence through a series of marketing communications approaches that are current, innovative, practical and potentially impactful.

“WCT Group with its ecosystem of engineering and construction, property development, retail malls and hospitality businesses have what it takes to be a highly distinguished community curator within the region if the brand is able to portray a differentiated approach in engaging with its stakeholders through a singular voice”.

“With COMY’s local knowledge and expertise supported by affiliate partners in the region under Citrine One Global, the agency will provide WCT Group with strategic communications solutions that are distinctive to increase positive outcomes for the brand in Malaysia and in the region if required,” Ivlynn said.

New Miniplayer Experience Lets Users Enjoy Songs and Podcasts from Spotify directly in their Facebook App

We all have that friend or loved one who always seems to be in-the-know regarding the hottest emerging artists or the latest releases—and who uses their social network to share their latest discoveries.

Discovery is important to Spotify. That’s why we’re improving how users share and engage with songs and podcast episodes by introducing a new miniplayer experience driven by social-discovery—one that allows listeners to enjoy audio from Spotify directly within Facebook, without switching between apps.

Starting today in select markets* including Malaysia, Spotify Premium users can discover and experience songs and episodes with full playback directly from Spotify inside the Facebook app on iOS and Android. Spotify Free users can enjoy the same great experience via shuffle mode with accompanying ads from Spotify.

Beyond Spotify shares to Facebook News Feed, fans will also have the ability to play songs via the miniplayer through select verified artists’ posts, or even from user-uploaded videos on Facebook that contain licensed music. Your reach just got even greater.

Here’s how to launch the miniplayer:
  • Tap the “Play” button on the song you, your friend, family member, or favorite creator shared from Spotify to their Facebook News Feed.
  • The first time you’re using the miniplayer, you’ll see a consent dialog open, click on Connect to continue.
  • If you’re logged in to Spotify, the apps will automatically switch and playback will start from within the Spotify app. (If you’re not logged in, you will be prompted to do so.)
  • Spotify keeps playing even if you keep scrolling down your News Feed, but you'll have control over playback options so you can pause or dismiss the miniplayer.

Over the past year, we’ve seen how social media continues to be an incredibly important way to connect with friends and loved ones -- especially when gathering in person is more challenging. Audio continues to be something that brings people together.

*The new integration is rolling out in Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand. Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Africa, Thailand, Uruguay, and USA. We're looking forward to introducing this experience to more markets over the coming months.

WCT Malls Aidilfitri di Sawah Padi - Raya theme is in support of the Pusing Selangor Dulu campaign in reviving the state tourism sector

Unable to balik kampung this Raya? Fret not. WCT Malls together with Tourism Selangor are working together to bring your kampung back to you.

This initiative includes building 462-square-metre replicas of paddy fields at Paradigm Mall Petaling Jaya (PJ), gateway@klia2 and SkyPark Terminal.

These replicas are part of the three malls’ Aidilfitri di Sawah Padi themed decoration between 16 April 2021 to 23 May 2021.

Selena Chua
The curation of the decor was aimed at recreating the familiar rustic scenery of rice production villages in the northern part of Selangor such as Sekinchan, Sungai Besar and Tanjung Karang at this time of the year when the paddy fields will be turning majestically golden yellow as the harvesting season begins.

Selena Chua, Chief Executive Officer – WCT Malls Management said, “We hope that our highly instagrammable ‘Aidilfitri di Sawah Padi’ theme can contribute positively towards the ongoing ‘Pusing Selangor Dulu’ campaign to attract the communities living around the Klang Valley to pusing in Petaling Jaya, Sepang and Subang.”

“The management of these neighbourhood and airport malls understand the nostalgic sentiments shared among our employees and customers who are celebrating the Hari Raya and anticipating that the interstate travel will remain closed come to Hari Raya Aidilfitri.”

“As such, the team has paid a lot of attention to detail to recreate the balik kampung scene and ambience, complete with details such as bicycles, chicks, life-sized buffalo and motorcycle,” she said adding that the paddy field is also a representation of rice being the most important staple food among Malaysians and our food culture.

On the ‘Pusing Selangor Dulu’ campaign, Azrul Shah Bin Mohamad, General Manager of Tourism Selangor said, “Resetting the tourism industry at a time when interstate travels are still restricted requires a lot of creativity as it will involve creating new attractions to draw the attention of people from the same locality.”

As such, a donation bin will be placed at Paradigm Mall PJ’s Upper Atrium, Level UG to collect unused or unwanted fabrics from the public.

Monetary contributions in support of this initiative are also welcomed.

From capitalising on its speed to market and nimble structure for quick and effective decision making, mixed in with a blend of the Western way of doing business via its Pepsi-Co partnership supported by the unique Japanese business heritage of its parent company, Asahi Group Holdings Ltd (Asahi Japan) – Etika succeeds in being the only fully integrated Halal beverage company to offer all categories of beverages to the Malaysian market across 18 brands all due to Khalid’s expertise and guiding hand on the tiller.

Under Khalid’s leadership, Etika has won Asia’s Best Employer Brand Award from 2018-2020, Excellent Employer Award, Excellence in Learning and Development and Excellence in HR Change Management, all within 2019, and Best HR Strategy in Line with Business two years in a row.

Khalid believes leadership has progressed from hierarchical and authoritarian models into collective, participative leadership where one plus one is equal to three. “In today’s thriving workplace, it is very likely for a leader to come across someone who is more capable in their field working under him. If a participative management style is not optimised, there is a high probability for the intelligence and wisdom existing in the organisation to be overlooked,” he asserts.

“A top executive who can bring people with different skills sets and experiences together to contribute to workplace policies and decisions in line with a corporation’s business goals can make a difference to both employees and stakeholders. Khalid is such a man,” shares Shanggari Balakrishnan, Chief Executive Officer of MORS Group.

NTT Cyberjaya 5 Data Center receives certifications from Uptime Institute and Telecommunications Industry Association

The certifications demonstrate NTT’s clear focus and leadership as part of its commitment to the region’s important economic progression

NTT Ltd., a leading global technology services company, announces that its fifth data center at Cyberjaya Campus, Cyberjaya 5 (CBJ5), has received UPTIME Tier III Certificate of Design Documents and the Tier III Certificate of Constructed Facility. In addition, CBJ5 has achieved the TIA-942 Rated-3 certification by EPI, the only ANSI/TIA-942 CAB (Conformity Assessment Body) authorised under the official TIA-942 Accreditation Scheme.

The UPTIME Tier III certificates mean CBJ5 meets the performance and reliability requirements for around-the-clock operations and efficiently operate without any shutdowns, ensuring maximum level of safety and security for optimum performance. Its TIA-942 Rated-3 certificate confirms that CBJ5 can undergo any planned maintenance without downtime or disruption to its operations.

The achievement was celebrated with a special ceremony officiated by Oka Hiroshi, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia and Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin, Chief Regulatory Officer, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). “We are very confident that CBJ5 and its new certifications, together with NTT’s enormous investment in a new and high capacity submarine cable project, will attract more international investors and enterprises to the country, strengthening it as a business and economic hub while contributing to the new digital initiative, MyDIGITAL, which aims to transform Malaysia into a regional leader in digital economy,” said Oka Hiroshi during the event.

MCMC Chief Regulatory Officer, Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin, congratulated NTT for its achievement, “NTT in Malaysia has been successfully operating the Cyberjaya campus data center for over 24 years. The recognitions and achievement reflects the exceptional standards that NTT has always worked towards.”

CBJ5 was awarded the certifications following a rigorous inspection of the facilities and operations by Uptime Institute and EPI upon its completion in February 2021. Furthermore, CBJ5 meets other global standard practice such as Payment Card Industry and Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), Threat and Vulnerability Risk Assessment (TVRA), and Data Center Risk Assessment (DCRA) which was carried out based on Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) Risk Management in Technology (RMiT) framework.

Commenting on the accolades, Henrick Choo, CEO of NTT Ltd. Malaysia said, “With these certifications, our customers such as BFSIs, can be assured that our data centre operates at the highest quality standards. Our Cyberjaya Campus features a high-density fiber network facilitating inter- connection among our clients to create a robust digital supply chain ecosystem. This is especially crucial now as corporations are shifting towards hybrid cloud services to address demands of upgrade and supporting critical infrastructure as well as storage needs, along with using devices to support remote working during the pandemic.”

“We believe that effective connectivity and reliable infrastructure are crucial to ensure business continuity. Apart from global reach, our clients also benefit from our local operational expertise alongside a full stack of customizable solutions. Our data center is equipped with advanced technology, technically skilled employees, and proactive troubleshooting to help our clients avoid costly application and network downtime, ensuring resiliency for recovery,” said Matsuo Ryuichi, Executive Vice President of NTT Ltd’s Global Data Centers division.

CBJ5 commenced its service on 3 February 2021. This latest data center by NTT boasts a Tier IV [1] ready, compact and modular design, to provide clients with flexible and scalable power, and a cooling solution of up to 15kW/rack. CBJ5 has a cooling wall system that is the first of its kind, offering optimum power efficiency and cost-effective cooling system to support high density hyperscalers as well as high- end corporate users in Malaysia.
