Do We Take Our Home Appliances for Granted? Here’s 3 Examples of How They Keep Us Healthy

Health and hygiene for us and our family are the priority now especially with current pandemic situation. We are always looking to stay as healthy as we can while being able to enjoy ourselves to the fullest. As the saying goes, “health is wealth.” This goes without saying that healthy lifestyle at home is one of the most important aspects to lead an overall healthy life.

A dirty home can cause multiple health issues, especially for people who already have pre-existing conditions. Think about the untouched soft toys or other things that are sitting around in your home, gathering dust that can cause allergies, skin rashes or infection; or a dirty fridge with old food that need to be thrown out to avoid food contamination or food poisoning. All these contribute to the hygiene of a home. Imagine a hoarder’s dirty home with things piled up, collecting dirt, dust and bacteria that are harmful to our health – we don’t want that now, do we?

Lucky for us, product innovations today have advanced impeccably, and we have home appliances that can assist us in making sure our home hygiene stays at an optimal level. In this article, we have spelled out a few home appliances that are beneficial to one’s home (that we often take for granted) and can help keep families healthy.

Washing Machine

Washing machines nowadays are important to the hygiene of a household. Our university days have taught us that washing machines are one of the things we cannot go one day without, especially when we are living in hostels or dormitories. The convenience of having a washing machine situated in your living quarters is truly a privilege. Which is why we should all the more appreciate our washing machines at home. They don’t just clean clothes, they eliminate dirt and stains to ensure that the clothes being put on are at their cleanest and most hygienic. With the right kind of washing machine, it can even remove allergens and dust mites, which can cause allergies and respiratory issues. Just what kind of washing machine does that, you asked?

LG’s AI DD™ washing machine is a capable washing machine that removes 99.99% allergens, keeping allergies at bay and the dust away with its Steam™ feature. Plus, its TurboWash™ 360˚ thoroughly cleans clothes to keep hygiene level at its best in just 39 minutes per wash cycle. Think of a turbo in a car, this washing machine washes clothes at speed! Not only does it remove kuah kacang on your shirt, but it does it in a short time too. If you ever want to wear something that needs to be washed quick, look no further.

Something that most of us can’t live without especially living in Malaysia – almost everywhere we go, there would be air-conditioning. However, overusing air-conditioning can come with potential indoor discomfort such as indoor air pollution due to poor air circulation. Which is why, homes should be equipped with a smart and efficient air-conditioner; an air-conditioner that can help circulate and filter the air in the room to keep indoor air pollution in our home away.

With an air-conditioner such as the LG DUALCOOL, one can sleep in comfort knowing that 99.9% of adhering bacteria is removed from your surroundings and it deodorises the space too. The Plasmaster™ Ionizer+ reduces harmful microscopic particles by infusing the air passing through the air conditioner with over 3 million ions. This makes your home environment cool, comfortable, AND hygienic.

Another essential at home that most of us cannot do without is a refrigerator. Without a reliable refrigerator, our leftover rice we want to use to make delicious fried rice would be spoilt. What would Uncle Roger say? However, many should know that a clean fridge can contribute to a healthier lifestyle, which would involve a deep cleaning of your fridge to keep bad odours or bacteria away. Now, we all know that deep cleaning a fridge is time-consuming and at times, tiring. What better way to alleviate that problem with a fridge that has features to reduce the number of times we have to deep clean our fridge?

Equipped with the Hygiene FRESH+™ feature, LG’s InstaView™ Door-in-Door Refrigerator keeps food free from bacteria up to 99.999% while minimising bad odour in the refrigerator. This means food in the fridge would last longer and would not spoil easily. If you love to drink homemade fruit juice, the FRESHBalancer™ feature also keeps fruits and vegetables in their optimal condition by adjusting the right amount of humidity. Fruits and vegetables will stay fresh longer. It would definitely help with leading a healthier lifestyle for you and your family and you don’t have to worry about your fruits and vegetables going bad fast as well.

Not only do these home appliances help with a healthy lifestyle at home but they make life more convenient and comfortable, all the while being practical and efficient. With their stylish appearance, they can also serve as a home décor if need be! If you are unsure of what home appliance to get, this article can definitely give you some ideas! Now that you know how these home appliances contribute to health and hygiene for you and your family, wouldn’t you say you now appreciate them just a tad bit more?

airasia sets up vaccination centre at RedQ to accelerate vaccination among aviation workforce

Allstars waiting to be vaccinated at AirAsia RedQ Vaccination Centre today.

airasia is all set to wake up its aircraft and start up the engines to return to the skies in the near future and in preparation towards that, has established a vaccination centre at its headquarters, RedQ in Malaysia from 30 July to 1 August 2021.

In its effort to help accelerate the vaccination uptake among the aviation workforce, airasia is making arrangements for about 2,500 of its Allstars to participate in the vaccination drive.

With vaccination, Allstars and their colleagues in aviation will be able to protect their well-being and safety during this period, whilst preparing for the resumption of air travel in the near future.

The vaccine will be administered by health professionals from DOC2US, one of the Healthcare Organisers (HCO) appointed by ProtectHealth Corporation Sdn. Bhd. The programme is supported by the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply Access Guarantee (JKJAV), co-chaired by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) as well as the Ministry of Transport (MOT).

airasia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes with the DOC2US team at AirAsia RedQ Vaccination Centre today.

airasia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said: “The vaccination momentum is accelerating in all of our key markets. Malaysia is amongst the top Asean countries and on track to have around 80% of the population vaccinated by the end of 2021 with Thailand vaccinating around 60% of its population and around 50% in the Philippines and Indonesia by the year-end.

“It is critical to ensure that everyone works together to increase vaccination capacity nationwide and help eliminate the virus. With aggressive vaccination rolls out in Asean and around the world, countries which are well progressed such as the US and EU countries are starting to reopen their economies and are beginning to reopen tourism.”

Encouraging signs are on the horizon. Thailand has reopened leisure travel for vaccinated tourists under the Phuket Sandbox and Samui Plus programme this month and AirAsia Philippines’ operation is looking at a similar gradual resumption of services aiming to fly up to 16% of pre-Covid capacity from the end of next month. Currently, the majority of Allstars around the region either have already been vaccinated or registered to get their shots as soon as possible and all AirAsia’s operating crew will be vaccinated by the time operations resume.

“Realistically, we don’t need the full population vaccinated to start flying with many experts holding the view of a 50% vaccination base for the people to start flying again. With daily vaccinations now exceeding 550,000 and growing in Malaysia, we should reach the desired target real soon. From what we are seeing internationally, if we can speed up and get to 20-30%, we will start to see cases coming down and the curve dramatically turning,” said Tony.

AirAsia Allstars getting vaccinated at AirAsia RedQ Vaccination Centre today.

With the tourism industry contributing over 15% of GDP in Malaysia alone, vaccines are key for protection and will play a strong role in supporting tourism and the economy to get back on its feet - at the same time, helping to ease domestic travel restrictions and reopen international borders securely as fast as possible.

There is a clear correlation between vaccines and recovery as evidenced in the US, Canada, and many other European countries that have achieved high inoculation rates amongst their respective populations. In the US, for example, the economy is going to fully reopen soon and air passenger traffic has also improved in tandem with the gradual reopening of borders and vaccine roll out.

“I'm confident we will have enough of the population vaccinated and an international health passport solution, be it paper in the short term or digital in the longer term. One thing I am sure about, is there will be a strong regional comeback in Asean, hopefully by the end of 2021 and an international reboot by early 2022.

Tony remains optimistic about the future of airasia which is now a digital lifestyle company anchored on travel. airasia is not just an airline anymore and is starting to see some key competitors take notice and follow its lead. This is a testament to what the company has achieved in the past 18 months.

Not only have airasia rapidly put in place the right foundations for a viable and successful future for its airline, airasia’s transformation to become the Asean Super App of choice is gaining huge momentum and is already delivering solid results across all digital platforms, setting it apart from competitors to be more robust and resilient in the post Covid-19 world.

“The long wait is coming to an end. We will recover so much stronger. While we transform into a digital and aviation company one thing that won’t change, is our commitment to the people. The vaccination drive is not only for our aviation workforce, but also for our delivery riders who are also our Allstars. We look forward to once again delivering volume for tourism in our key markets and creating jobs again as we return to the skies,” added Tony.

Self-regulation and ethical reporting of news on suicide is an important component of suicide prevention

Awareness, respect and empathy needed to encourage responsible coverage of suicide news

Credit: Photo by Roger H. Goun

As the country continues its battle against COVID-19, the pandemic has taken a toll on Malaysians’ mental health. Amidst economic uncertainties and self-isolation from lockdowns, recent reports on the increasing numbers of suicide cases have become a cause for concern.

Between January and May this year, 468 suicide cases were reported to the police — averaging at three cases a day. This indicates a stark increase from previous years, with 631 total reported cases in 2020 and 609 in 2019.

Police statistics also show that women and young people appeared to be the most vulnerable groups. Of the 1,708 deaths by suicide from 2019 to May 2021, 1,427 cases involved women while 281 victims were men. Over half of these cases involved teenagers below the age of 18, with 872 deaths.

In light of this, the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (the Content Forum) strongly advocates for self-regulation among media professionals, content creators, and the general public when reporting or sharing news of suicides.

“Irresponsible reporting of suicides is recognized as a risk factor for triggering suicidal behavior especially when it involves sensationalism and explicit reporting of the methods adopted,” said the Content Forum Executive Director Mediha Mahmood. “While the Content Forum acknowledges the newsworthiness of these cases, media practitioners should also be sensitive as to how their reporting can exert considerable impact on the victims’ families as well as the community, especially those with a higher vulnerability to suicide.”

The World Health Organization’s 2017 media guidelines on suicide reporting indicates that media reports on suicide, particularly those which are sensationalist in nature and include excessive details on the nature and locations of suicide cases, can spark “copycat” suicides. Conversely, responsible and ethical reporting on suicides can encourage people to seek help for their mental health by disseminating help-seeking information and facilitating a respectful discussion of an otherwise stigmatized issue.

In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health’s own Guidelines on For Media Reporting on Suicide detail several key factors to consider when reporting suicide cases. These include avoiding details of the method of suicide, publishing photographs of the deceased, depicting suicide as a method of coping with personal problems, and it also includes resources for help within the report.

While social media has become the primary way for Malaysians to stay connected with each other during this pandemic, social media users should also consider the impact of the content they choose to share and whether or not they should even share it.

“In their eagerness to share news about suicide, some may forget that the news involves real people and real emotions. Exposure to suicide stories can be emotionally disturbing so we should always treat such issues with respect and empathy; avoid sharing sensational or judgmental content,” said Mediha.

Mediha added that many social media platforms have guidelines and resources for discussing suicide, and encouraged more content producers and consumers to make use of these when posting their content.

“Being entrusted with the responsibility of setting ethical content standards for the industry, the Content Forum continues to advocate responsible journalism and is keen in promoting better digital discourse around the issue of suicide,” she said. LG Electronics (LG) announces the rollout of LG Eclair (model QP5) soundbar, its most compact model to date, starting in North America followed by other regions around the world. A 2021 CES Innovation Award Honoree, this soundbar is a great fit for contemporary lifestyles thanks to its sleek, compact design that fits well in limited spaces while still being able to deliver immersive sound.

Despite its compact size, LG Eclair delivers powerful performance with Dolby Atmos® and DTS:X support while still keeping peace with the neighbors with its low vibration, power bass subwoofer. Measuring only 296 x 59.9 x 126mm – only one-third the width of LG’s previously smallest 3.1.2 channel Atmos soundbar, SP8YA – LG Eclair features a chic oval design and jersey fabric in classic black or white that blend in seamlessly with any modern decor.

LG Eclair’s advanced, 3.1.2 channel system with wireless subwoofer employs Meridian Audio’s tuning and technology to deliver exceptional detail and spatiality. Meridian’s Horizon technology up-mixes two channel stereo content into immersive, multichannel audio to deliver a wider soundstage for a truly immersive listening experience with tonal balance that remains authentic to the original recording.

LG Eclair offers an enhanced viewing experience thanks to 4K pass-through support which allows viewers to enjoy stunning 4K and HDR content, including Dolby Vision, on their favorite streaming services. What’s more, adaptive LG AI Sound Pro analyzes the content being played and automatically applies the best sound settings, depending on which genre of content the user is enjoying, whether it’s news, music or cinema.

Not only does LG Eclair make sound come alive, it’s also designed with convenience in mind, requiring fewer cables without sacrificing sound quality. This is possible because enhanced audio return channel (eARC) support allows for the lossless transmission of 5.1-channel, 7.1-channel and immersive audio such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X on compatible TVs. Owners of 2021 LG TVs will also benefit from authentic and clear sound with TV Sound Mode Share, which combines the processing power of LG’s latest α (Alpha) AI processors and AI Sound Pro to reveal rich nuances of the content source [1].

Beyond sound performance, LG designed the Eclair not only to elevate the home viewing experience but to reduce its impact on the environment. This effort has resulted in LG Eclair being recognized as an Eco-Product by SGS Société Générale de Surveillance SA of Switzerland [2].

[1] TV Sound Mode Share and AI processor version vary by TV model.
[2] SGS Eco-Product certification based on several categories including use of recycled materials in packaging. The soundbar ships in eco-conscious packaging with internal packing material made from recycled molded pulp, an alternative to polystyrene foam and plastic.
