The score includes familiar songs from the 1971 film, such as “Pure Imagination”, “The Candy Man” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket”. These appear alongside original music by Grammy and Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, whose credits include Hairspray and Mary Poppins Returns.
Stage Illusions Bring the Factory to Life
The new production combines special effects with hologauze 3D technology based on advanced magic principles to create its immersive theatrical world.
In a joint statement, Simone Genatt and Marc Routh, Producers and Co-Owners of Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia, described the show as a fantasy for audiences from everywhere. They expressed their excitement about bringing Selangor audiences a production that celebrates imagination and invention, developed by an all-Broadway creative team.
Joining that team is Las Vegas magic and illusion designer Tim Clothier, whose work helps translate Wonka’s fantastical creations into stage effects. Clothier described designing new theatrical wizardry for a character defined by imagination as a dream come true.
From Broadway and the West End to a Global Tour
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opened on Broadway in 2017 and ran for more than 300 performances. A four-year North American tour followed, continuing through 2022. The musical also enjoyed a run in London’s West End, where it received two Olivier Awards.
The Global Tour is scheduled to travel across Asia, the Middle East and India over two to three years. Announced cities include Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Hainan, Taipei and Seoul.
The Creative Team Behind the Production
Based on Roald Dahl’s novel, the musical features a book by David Greig, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman. Songs from the motion picture are by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.
The production credits original direction to four-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien and original choreography to Joshua Bergasse. For the Global Tour, Matt Lenz directs, Alison Solomon oversees choreography, and Nate Patten and Greg Jarrett provide musical supervision.
