Malaysia’s Favourite British Singer, Ed Sheeran Sets Yet Another Spotify Streaming Record with 69m Monthly Listeners

English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has racked up yet another streaming record by surpassing a staggering 69 million (m) monthly listeners on Spotify, and is on course to soon hit 70 million.

The personable pop star, who leads the way with 69m monthly listeners on the world’s largest streaming service, has seen a spike in ‘Sheerios’ – as his fans are known – in the past month. The new record coincides with the 12th July release of one of the most anticipated albums of 2019: his ‘No. 6 Collaborations Project’.

Ed Sheeran has always been a favourite among Malaysians. Besides earning bragging rights for Malaysia’s Most Streamed Artist of 2017, his album, ÷ (Divide) was also named the Most Streamed Album of the Year, clocking 3.1 billion streams worldwide. More than that, 12,000 of his concert tickets for the Malaysian leg of his ÷ (Divide) Tour were all snapped up in just 30 minutes!

Sulinna Ong, UK Head of Artist & Label Services and Acting Head of Music Culture & Editorial at Spotify says: “Ed Sheeran is an undisputed international superstar, so it’s really no surprise he and the Atlantic UK team are enjoying such success. He and his team were eager to leverage Spotify’s discovery capabilities to reach fans across our nearly 80 markets around the world and make No. 6 Collaborations Project even more of a global sensation. From prominent out-of-home advertising and exclusive listening parties across key markets, to a custom playlist featuring in-depth track-by-track interviews, this was a holistic campaign that was thought through at every angle.

“Further, given the collaborative and cross-genre nature of the album, the music was uniquely positioned to target an especially wide array of listeners -- both fans of Ed, and the many featured artists -- and music from his album landed in more than 800 official Spotify playlists, an incredible and rare feat.

“Ed and his team deserve every bit of the credit they’ve earned, and given the very strong early indications, we’re excited to see how the album continues to resonate with listeners throughout the summer and beyond.”

Ed’s latest album is a more R&B/hip-hop-leaning record than its predecessor, it sees the superstar collaborating with the likes of Justin Bieber, Stormzy, Eminem, 50 Cent, Camila Cabello, Chance The Rapper, Travis Scott, Cardi B and Khalid.

The hitmaker is no stranger to breaking Spotify records. The release of Divide (styled ÷) set a new high for first-day streams for an album (56M+ streams) and ‘Shape of You’ set the record for best one day streams for a track at the time of release (10M+ streams).

On the first day of the release, songs from ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ claimed five of the Top 10 tracks worldwide on Spotify. The biggest track from the album, the previously released ‘I Don’t Care’ (with Justin Bieber) was Spotify’s second biggest song worldwide on its release day.

Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (“Bank Islam”) recently signed memorandum of understanding with two financial technology (“Fintech”) firms namely BerryPay (M) Sdn. Bhd. (“BerryPay”) and KiplePay Sdn. Bhd. (“KiplePay”) to offer new convenience of financial transaction through mobile remittance and e-wallet platform.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Encik Mohd Muazzam Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) of Bank Islam, Dato Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar, Chairman of BerryPay and Encik Tan Kay Yen, CEO of KiplePay.

BerryPay will provide mobile remittance services to serve foreign worker account holders by bridging them through a unique e-banking system of pseudo bank accounts to other banked and non-banked recipients and vice-versa. Partnering with Bank Islam, BerryPay aims to provide end-to-end foreign worker onboarding for plantations, peer to peer fund transfers, as well as cross-border payments for its customers.

Meanwhile, KiplePay is a licensed Bank Negara Malaysia e-wallet issuer where it operates on two fronts, namely a cashless payment gateway for the business and e-wallet for consumers. From this partnership, KiplePay and Bank Islam aim to empower the cashless communities further especially in the education sector and support the huge growth in payments for the e- commerce industry. As a start, KiplePay will introduce a new payment channel for Bank Islam via QR, the ability to do mobile reloads as well in-app marketing to users.

Encik Mohd Muazzam Mohamed said, “These partnership with BerryPay and KiplePay are a testament to the transformation in becoming digital Islamic bank of choice by end 2021. We are creating partnerships that are aimed to enhance customer experience and further drive the country’s cashless society and financial inclusion agenda.”

BerryPay is a cross-border virtual banking platform that encourages financial inclusion of an otherwise unbanked segment in Indonesia, other south Asian countries and the rest of the world. It aims to be a more accessible platform for remittances and cross-border payments. Through the partnership with Bank Islam, BerryPay envisions to extend its solution capability to users in Malaysia with the need to perform cross-border transactions seamlessly in the palm of their hands.

On the other hand, KiplePay will not just accelerate the cashless ecosystem at the university level but will also support Bank Islam and their online merchants in the B2B space through the enhancement in Bank Islam’s gateway solution, supporting the immense growth within the e- commerce and online transactions industry.

“Leveraging on a modernised payment gateway, Bank Islam’s merchants are able to customise the payment page, have fast and easy settlement while enjoying a multi-tiered rate based on the transaction peaks of their business,” said Encik Tan Kay Yen, CEO of KiplePay.

“Through these partnerships, Bank Islam is expected to increase its focus on growing its fee- based income and illustrating its appetite to work alongside Fintechs. We embrace and welcome Fintechs to provide new and better services to serve our customers.” Encik Muazzam added.

The Finding Jordan Picasso annual art contest by Jordan Oral Care Malaysia has ended on a high, with thirty talented children from all over Malaysia winning attractive prizes worth RM 30,000. The two categories included Category A of children between the ages of six and nine, and Category B of children between the ages of ten and twelve.

In order to participate in the contest, children between the ages of six to twelve were tasked to create art pieces depicting their favourite meals using non-digital mediums, with some going as creative as using recycled materials to build a delicious looking art piece. Sandee said, “A part of Jordan’s philosophy is sustainable living as we are 100 per cent Eco at Heart. Using recycled materials in the children’s art pieces definitely deserves a thumbs up from us!”

Deputy Head of Mission at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Erlend Sannes Hadland, who was also present at the event said, “Encouraging and nurturing creativity is important in a child’s development. Art is a form of self-expression, and a form of communication.” He continued, “I am happy that Jordan has been encouraging creativity in children through their Finding Jordan Picasso contest. This year’s food-related theme which comes with a reminder to brush your teeth thirty minutes after a meal further enforces Jordan’s commitment to both dental hygiene and fostering the love of art in children.”

Taiwan Bubble Tea And Halal Products Have Landed In Malaysia

Halal bubble tea? That's right! The ever-popular bubble tea from Taiwan is made using halal raw material which makes it the ideal beverage for the Muslim community in Malaysia and beyond.

The Taiwan Expo 2019, held on the 5th and 6th of July at Penang's Setia SPICE Convention Centre, features the best halal products from Taiwan at the Taiwan Halal & Bubble Tea Pavilion. With the Penang government actively developing its halal industry, there are plenty of business opportunities between Taiwanese halal products manufacturers and Malaysian businesses waiting to be explored.

Taiwanese halal products are highly regarded for the high-quality production and attractive packaging, and the products on display at this year's expo include many halal food & beverage items, halal beauty products and halal agricultural products.

The main exhibitors at the halal pavilion include five of the most iconic halal products and bubble tea makers in Taiwan, including Shih Chen Foods, Yilan Anyong LOHAS, FuFann Enterprise, Kuojer Enterpreise and Yung Soon Lih Food Machine. The companies will be showcasing their instant milk tea, premium fish essence, coconut paste, bubble tea raw ingredient, and multifunctional bubble tea cooker respectively.

The Taiwan Halal Products & Bubble Tea Sharing Session scheduled for the second day (6 July) is not to be missed. Amongst the activities lined up include halal cosmetic products feature by local social influencers as well as a special cooking demonstration by Penang's own celebrity chef Nurilkarim who will be whipping up delectable Nyonya Asam Fish Curry, Pineapple and Cucumber Acar (salad) using Taiwanese halal products. The media and halal industry players are welcome to join for this culinary delight.

As of today, Taiwan has more than 1,000 halal-certified manufacturers and eateries compared to the 500 each in Japan and South Korea. Taiwan has put significant effort and resources in developing its halal industry, and Malaysia, with more than 20 million Muslims as well as being the most advanced Muslim market in Southeast Asia, is one of Taiwan's most important target markets. In addition, the long-standing friendly relationship between Malaysia and Taiwan provide considerable room for further cooperation in the halal sphere.
