Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), through its branch campus known as UniKL British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI), will be cooperating under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on academic and research endeavours surrounding smart city technology, urban disaster prevention, as well as other activities and programmes of mutual interest geared towards technological innovation.
Under the collaboration, a Huawei Intelligent Operation Center (IOC) will be set up at UniKL BMI for research and development (R&D) opportunities, as well as to empower UniKL with the capacity to provide authorised short-course training to its students and the public, fostering technological innovation and practical training.
At the same time, Huawei Malaysia and UniKL will embark on the exchange of academic and research information or material specifically on Flood Monitoring Control.
The MoU signing was witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Bin Hamidi during his visit to Huawei’s Headquarters in Shenzhen, China. Signing on behalf of Huawei Malaysia was its Chief Executive Officer Mr Simon Sun while UniKL is represented by its President/Chief Executive Officer Associate Professor Ir Dr Azman Senin.
Speaking on the partnership, Associate Professor Ir Dr Azman Senin, President and Chief Executive Officer of UniKL, stated that the MoU is a testament to the university’s commitment to providing its students with the best learning opportunities and resources.
"This MoU opens up new horizons for UniKL and we look forward to a fruitful collaboration with Huawei Malaysia that will benefit our students, researchers, and the broader community," he highlighted.
Huawei Malaysia CEO Mr Simon Sun said, “The Huawei IOC is a decision-making assistance model that makes predictions using massive amounts of industry-specific data. It enables the efficient deployment of manpower and resources in critical situations, such as floods, leading to greatly improved city governance. The IOC that will be set up at UniKL BMI will be a powerful educational, research and development tool for both students and researchers alike as we head towards a connected, intelligent future of smart cities.”
UniKL is a wholly owned higher learning institution by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development. UniKL’s collaborative ties with Huawei Malaysia go back to 2012 when UniKL became a Huawei University Teaching Laboratory. The primary aim of the most recent collaboration with Huawei Malaysia is to strengthen, promote, and develop capacity-building cooperation based on equality and mutual benefit.
