Keeping active in Germany, from the North Sea to the Alps

Castle along the Danube Zollernalb Trail (Baden-Wuerttemberg)

With plenty of breath-taking vistas in Germany, there is something for everyone when keeping active during the holiday season, whether they are rivers and lakes or mountains and valleys. While travelling to Germany may not yet be a possibility in 2020, countries like Singapore and Germany are making inroads to ensure safe travels for holiday-goers in time to come so that we can #DreamNowVisitLater. Additionally, with the #DiscoverGermanyFromHome campaign, launched by the German National Tourist Board, visitors from Southeast Asia can virtually experience destinations in Germany — across the 16 federal states — from the comfort of their own homes. Plus, with all the fitness regimes and goals accomplished during Circuit Breaker or lockdown, training for cross-country biking will now be a breeze.

The Best of Both Worlds: City and Country
With more than 200 long distance cycling routes in Germany, there are plenty of opportunities to see what its cities and countryside have to offer. The Rhine Cycle Route provides the quintessential German experience. With the river being at the heart of life in many parts of Germany, cyclists can explore the history, culture and significance of the river from its source in the Alps to the North Sea coast. This route passes many UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the celebrated 194-metre-high Loreley Rock cliff in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, as well as the idyllic medieval-era town of Constance, known for its impressive council building that was the home of the 1417 papal election.

Meander Through Germany’s Wine Regions
Cyclists who like to enjoy a taste of the finer things in life can explore routes through German wine country and vineyards. During the ultimate German Wine Route, cyclists traipse through one of the largest wine regions in Germany, where lush vineyards drape the terraced slopes between the foothills of the Palatinate Forest and Rhinland Plain. Here, there are plenty of taverns and wineries where pitstops to taste Rieslings, Pinot Blancs and Dornfelders are not only recommended, but a way of life. For those looking for an alternative, the Moselle Cycle Route cuts through the southern Vosges mountains in France and takes cyclists through the twists and turns of romantic valleys and Middle Moselle Roman wine presses. This cycling path also meanders past the Bliesgau UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, known as the Tuscany of the Saarland with a rich culinary culture. Visitors interested in taking this route, can also hop on the 360° virtual ride and ride through the loops and curves of the Moselle, from Koblenz to France.

Relive a Part of Germany’s Magical History
History buffs can take in the sights and sounds of the Allgäu Castle Park Cycle Loop, a 219-kilometre long route that comprises both scenic, historical and culturally stimulating experiences. After drinking in the sights of Füssen’s old town, the trail leads cyclists to Hohenschwangau, with its stunningly regal views of Alpine peaks, royal palaces and museums dedicated to Ludwig II — the fairy tale king. This path takes cyclists through the foothills of the majestic Alps, with plenty of castles, palaces and monasteries to visit, including the Falkenstein Castle, Pilgrimage Church of Wies — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the Kaltentaler Brauhaus, known for its home-brewed beers.

Cycling vineyards (Rhineland Palatinate)

Hike Through a Slice of Paradise
Those who may not be comfortable on bicycles can also explore Germany’s many athletic, leisurely, family-friend and cultural hikes. With 50 routes of varying categories and a 200,000-kilometre network of trails that are peppered through some of the most stunning terrains, going on foot does not have to mean missing out on the beautiful sights and sounds of Germany. Roam through nature parks, national parks, UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, and even mountain summits — all complete with hiker-friendly accommodation and hospitality.

A day-long hike on the 66 Lakes Trail — an hour outside Berlin — takes visitors through numerous lakes, streams, rivers and marshes while marvelling at historic monuments like the Sanssouci Palace and Cecilienhof Palace. Spectacular waterscapes aside, the Heidschnuckenweg Trail takes hikers through a sea of idyllic lilac fields and heaths dotted with Heidschnucke sheep, whose delicious meat and carpet-making wool are renowned in the region.

Dubbed as one of Germany’s most beautiful hiking trails, The Painters’ Way combines romantic hikes in the Elbe Sandstone mountains with enchanting landscapes that provided inspiration for Romantic-era painters such as Caspar David Friedrich. Such views clearly transcend time, being the backdrop of Hollywood movies like The Chronicles of Narnia and The Grand Budapest Hotel. If leisurely trails are the order of the day, opt for the Goldsteig Trail, a classic Bavarian route named after the once-precious commodity of salt, or “white gold”. Now, it is more famous for the unmistakable Bavarian beer, where the amber nectar perfectly matches the region’s hearty cuisine.

Cycling at Hintersee Lake

Cycling or hiking, there is plenty to discover in Germany’s expansive natural landscapes, Alpine forests, as well as culturally significant locales.

Shopee: Consumer trust in e-commerce deepens

Shopee 10.10 Brands Festival brings 100% authentic products from over 1,200 brands and retailers

2020 has seen a major breakthrough for e-commerce as Malaysians are propelled to go online-first for branded and premium purchases. Seen in their purchasing habits and contrary to the notion that consumer spend has weakened, Shopee noted that demand climbed across all categories on its platform, with the most notable change recorded for brands and retailers in the mid and upper segment.

Swelling trust for bigger, branded purchases online
In addition to regular personal and household items, Shopee has seen growing confidence and comfort in purchasing premium and branded items priced RM3,000 and above on its platform. This shift is reflected in what users are searching for and buying on the platform. In recent months, most popular keywords on Shopee are iphone, laptop, washing machine and smart TV while bestsellers include Apple MacBook Pro, Bosch Built-in Dishwasher and Delonghi Coffee Machine. These changes are driven by the 100% authenticity guarantee provided by Shopee Mall.

Accelerated digital adoption in rural Malaysia
Ian Ho, Shopee Regional Managing Director
Digital infrastructure and adoption have always been growing steadily in states like Perlis, Kedah, Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan, but Shopee noted that the use and familiarity with e-commerce accelerated rapidly in the outskirts of these states in 2020. As e-commerce solves the perennial challenge of limited access to consumer goods outside of Klang Valley, Shopee also found that demand for the premium and branded segment multiplied by over 300 times since 2015. Rural buyers are also seen to be getting more comfortable with the entire digital ecosystem as many have converted from using offline payment methods to ShopeePay for their checkouts.

Ian Ho, Regional Managing Director of Shopee said, “Demand has accelerated for e-commerce in 2020 and we see a parallel increase in the level of trust and comfort that people have with online shopping. These developments signify new heights for the e-commerce industry. As we work closely with brands and retailers to capture growth, we see many successful campaigns created for our partners. Trusted brands such as Samsung have broken records in 2020, recording up to RM46,000 in a single transaction, among many other achievements.”

Shopee launches 10.10 Brands Festival for retailers to capture digital opportunities
2020 has also pushed more brick-and-mortar brands and retailers including the likes of Billion, Al-Ikhsan, Eco Shop, Machines, ADIDAS, and Muji to explore a hybrid operating model with e-commerce. Through Shopee’s integrated e-commerce ecosystem such as its strong logistics network, marketing tools, brands and retailers are able to provide consumers a seamless and enjoyable shopping experience. Besides helping them digitalize, Shopee is reinstating its commitment to assist them in scaling and succeeding online with its annual Shopee 10.10 Brands Festival.

Hear Them Out: Undoubtedly A Powerphone to Maximize Productivity and Creativity

Last month, in August 2020, Samsung introduced its latest smartphone in the Note series yet – the Galaxy Note20. While there are some out there with the misconception that this is “just another smartphone”, there are many who have recognized the Note20 for what it is – a feature-packed smartphone, ready to be your go-to associate for every aspect of your enhanced lifestyle.

To let fellow Malaysians know about the power of the Galaxy Note20; Dato’ Azril Mohd Radzi (Founder of V’Asia Cosmetic and Healthcare), Nini Marini (creative entrepreneur) and Zahir Kelvin Ong Abdullah (host of Money Matters) share their experiences with the productivity device and how it has enhanced their lifestyles in both their professional and personal hours.

Dato’ Azril Mohd Radzi’s No.1 All-Round Partner for Both Work and Leisure
“The Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra has a new premium design and highly-attractive colors. But it doesn’t just look good! It’s an amazing tool for work as well. The S Pen helps me work much more flexibly, and the Wireless DeX feature helps me get work done quickly too.”

This is what Dato Azril Mohd Radzi, Founder of V’Asia Cosmetic and Healthcare, had to say about the Galaxy Note20. Firstly, the phone’s timeless design helps him maintain a level of style and class, allowing him to show up and work with a confidence that no other smartphone has provided before. But beyond its design are the strong features that help him power through his work day. Features such as the improved S Pen, Wireless DeX, auto synchronization across multiple devices, and Link to Windows are a few of the things help him with furthering his cosmetics and healthcare brand – all from one device that fits into your pocket!

But outside work? Dato’ Azril Mohd Radzi adds that there is so much more the Galaxy Note20 has to offer apart from productivity. “Leading a company isn’t easy. I strive to lead an active and healthy life overall, mainly through regular cycling sessions. While I’ve always enjoyed them, I’ve never enjoyed cycling this much, as my Galaxy Note20 Ultra helps me take pictures and record videos of my views when I’m out cycling a route, and allows me to upload them with just one action” he added.

Moreover, the Galaxy Note20 pairs perfectly with other Galaxy devices as well, and when combined, will deliver a fuller and more satisfying Galaxy experience. When the Galaxy Buds Live and Galaxy Watch3 join in on Dato’ Azril Mohd Radzi’s cycling sessions, tracking his health and getting total music freedom are taken to the next level.

Check out this video below to know how easy life can be with the Galaxy Note20 Ultra – controlling everything from the palm of your hand.

Nini Marini’s Great Source of Artistic Inspiration
“Imagination is extremely important in producing a creative art piece. Often times, coming up with a brand new idea is the most difficult part of the process. The new Galaxy Note20’s S Pen makes that process much easier for me. Put that together with the large, ultra-high definition screen; and this has become one of my greatest sources of artistic inspiration,” said Nini Marini, an artist, self-taught painter, and creative entrepreneur based in Kuala Lumpur.

What Nini loves most about her Galaxy Note20 Ultra is that it is always by her side, as inspiration and ideas aren’t always there to refer to. With this new device, gone are the days when she had to carry a bulky sketchbook with her at all times, just in case an awesome idea for a new piece of art pops into her head while she’s between destinations.

“I still need a proper canvas to work on for my final artworks, but the Note20 Ultra really helps me during the initial stages. All artists usually do up a quick sketch on a sketchbook before working on the real thing. For me, my Note20 Ultra does exactly that and more. Another important thing is the gorgeous display, which accurately highlights every single detail no matter how small,” she added.

Follow Nini’s experiments with the Galaxy Note20 Ultra and how it complements her inspiration anytime, anywhere below.

Zahir Kelvin Ong Abdullah’s Reminder to Appreciate the Finer Things in Life
“In my daily life, efficiency matters. Everything I do must be efficient and precise. Thanks to Samsung, I can get that with the Galaxy Note20, which makes multi-tasking a breeze,” said Zahir Kelvin Ong Abdullah, host of the popular TV program Money Matters.

As host of the program, it is crucial that he is kept up-to-date by the minute of all matters regarding finance and economics, both locally and internationally. The task is monumentally daunting, but he highlights that the Note20 takes significant burden off his shoulders. With super-fast processing speeds and capabilities for multi-tasking, the Note20 helps him with daily updates, being aware of economic progressions. And as a person who plans his days almost by the minute, the Galaxy Note20 keeps him in check.

However, Kelvin added that the Galaxy Note20 has helped him realize the importance of letting loose and at the end of a long and productive day, and savoring the moment through pictures. Moments such as preparing a meal, enjoying quality time with your family, or watching the sunset.

That’s when you whip out your Galaxy Note20 to take a gorgeous picture with its professional-grade camera! Because moments like these are in fact, beautiful, and deserve to be documented and savored in all its glory.

Learn more about how Kelvin takes his trusty Galaxy Note20 Ultra with him wherever he goes, empowering both his work and life below.

Nestlé to Plant 3 Million Trees by 2023 in Malaysia

Accelerating Global Pledge to Address Climate Change

[From left] Y.B Dato' Dr. Shamsul Anuar bin Hj Nasarah, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) and Mr Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad officiating the launch of Project RELeaf to plant three million trees across Malaysia by 2023.

Nestlé announced its commitment to plant three million trees in the next three years through Project RELeaf, a reforestation initiative in Malaysia contributing to the company’s global pledge to achieve Zero Net Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050.

Project RELeaf builds on the pioneering Kinabatangan Rileaf Project, established by Nestlé in 2011, and which helped plant one million trees in Sabah. By widening its reach in Sabah and expanding for the first time to Peninsular Malaysia, Project RELeaf aims to scale up Nestlé’s efforts to restoring riparian and forest ecosystems, contributing to establish wildlife corridors and mitigate human-animal conflict, and protecting critical water supplies. The project will also help to develop greater awareness amongst local communities on environmental topics and will provide additional sources of income to improve their livelihoods.

Dato' Haji Che Roslan bin Che Daud, Deputy Secretary General (Planning and Development) Ministry of Federal Territories [second from right], and YBhg. Dato' Adnan Pawanteh, Executive Director, Group Corporate Affairs Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad [far right].

Chris Johnson, Executive Vice President Nestlé S.A., Chief Executive Officer, Zone Asia, Oceania and sub-Saharan Africa said, “We are mindful of the urgent need to address climate change, which is a threat to the sustainability of our business as well as for the planet’s future. Project RELeaf will enable us to accelerate our net-zero ambition by scaling up nature-based solutions to tackle this global climate issue. Not only will Project RELeaf enhance biodiversity, but it will subsequently help to absorb carbon emissions. Planting trees in areas connected with the sourcing of our ingredients contributes to the responsible management of our supply chain. Furthermore, reforestation complements our efforts to halt deforestation in our supply chains.”

Nestlé Malaysia will plant three million trees across the Kinabatangan Wetlands and Merisuli Forest Restoration areas in Sabah, as well as in forest reserves along the Central Forest Spine in Peninsular Malaysia. These forest reserves provide sanctuary for a great diversity of flora and fauna, including threatened wildlife such as orangutans, proboscis monkeys, Asian elephants, Malayan tigers, sun bears and tapirs.

Nestlé will collaborate with the Malaysian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the Sabah Forestry Department, Malaysian Nature Society, the Tropical Rainforest Conservation and the Research Center, Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Project, palm growers, as well as local communities and entrepreneurs for community-based seedling production and tree-planting operations.

The launch of Project RELeaf was officiated by YB Dato’ Dr. Shamsul Anuar Bin Hj Nasarah, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Mr. Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad. The event took place at Taman Rimba Alam, Precinct 15, Putrajaya.

YB Dato’ Dr. Shamsul Anuar Bin Hj Nasarah commented, “Malaysia has been blessed with abundant natural resources. We are committed to maintain at least 50% of the country’s land area with forest and tree cover in line with our pledge at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro 1992. As our nation develops, we must balance our growth with the conservation of our environment. As such, we are truly appreciative of Nestlé’s committed efforts to protect our nation’s biodiversity. We hope to see more public and private sector collaborations, to continue protecting our precious ecosystem for future generations.”

Y.B Dato' Dr. Shamsul Anuar bin Hj Nasarah and Mr Juan Aranols marked the start of Project RELeaf with the planting of Jelutong trees.

Mr. Juan Aranols added, “Nestlé’s pledge to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 reflects our ambition to contribute to a greener future. Project RELeaf, here in Malaysia, is a tangible step towards helping us realize this ambition. By restoring critical forest ecosystems, we will help to preserve ecosystems and protect biodiversity. These are vital to ensure supply chain sustainability while protecting the environment, as both elements are interconnected in nature. That will enable us to continue making a positive impact for both the planet and for people, as we will continue to empower local communities and support livelihoods via purchasing of seedlings and their involvement in planting activities.”

Project RELeaf is the next evolution of the Kinabatangan Rileaf Project which was a partnership with Yayasan Sime Darby and the Sabah Forestry Department. As of September 2020, one million trees have been planted across more than 2,700 ha of degraded forest.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Durian back by popular demand

Celebrate the flavours of Malaysia with the return of the localised limited-edition chocolate

Cadbury Dairy Milk, Malaysia’s favourite confectionery brand under Mondelēz International (Mondelez) has announced the return of its popular localised limited-edition flavour, Cadbury Dairy Milk Durian. They ease our daily lives without us even realising,” Vivy Yusof, Group Creative Director of FV says. “So, this collection, as much as it shows our love for Malaysia, is also a tribute to the thousands of postmen and employees at Pos Malaysia for all they’ve done for us since the 1880s. I thank Pos Malaysia Group for the collaboration and agreeing to do this collection with us! Having the same values to connect people, I am so proud that FV got to collaborate with them,” she continues.

While airlines continue to feel the effects of COVID-19, AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes’s latest move is surprising and exciting many as his company pivots and ventures back to his roots of music.

AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes said, “AirAsia Group never stops innovating and while our airline operation has been severely impacted by COVID-19, we’ve taken the opportunity to fast track and enhance other areas of our business.
